Metallurgical Models for Reheating Level 2

Wide range of the metallurgical models can be applied into the various Level 2 systems, not only the rolling mill Level 2, but also the reheating Level 2.

Reheating Furnace Level 2 Model

A combination of a group of thermal, mechanical and metallurgical models may be employed for the reheating furnace Level 2. On the one hand it helps to improve the heating quality (temperature profile, micro-alloy dislocation, crack avoidance, etc.) and to prevent the slab from over-heating, on the other hand it may greatly save energy and increase furnace productivity.

  • Finite differential method (FDM) slab temperature model. Predicts slab temperature profiles over the time and in various regions (body, top, bottom, head end, tail end, skid area, and the cross-section plane between two skids, etc.). FDM would be a valuable tool to solve the problem.

  • Furnace temperature profile model. Describes the temperature profile inside the furnace, for various zones such as preheat zone, heat zone and soak zone.

  • Slab thermal stress model. Calculate the thermal stress inside the slab through a coupled thermal and mechanical analysis. Either empirical and FEM could be applied depending on the cost and quality requirements.

  • Slab heating speed model. Determines the progress of the temperature increment per unit time over the heating period, for the top and bottom surfaces, as well as the center-thickness plane, etc.

  • Micro-alloy particles dissolution temperature model. Determines the dissolution temperatures of various micro-alloy particles (such as Nb(C, N), VN, VC, TiC, AIN, NbxVI-xCyNI-y). The greatest of these values should be used as the final dissolution temperature which will ensure all the related particles to go into the solution.

  • Residence time or walk speed optimization model. Designs the optimum walking speed or residence time for given furnace settings, to achieve the desired discharge slab temperature.

Reheating Level 2 Model Architecture

The newly developed Level 2 model may include following modules

  • Thermal, Mechanical and Metallurgical Models, to determine various parameters as described above, with also numerical analysis components.

  • Related rolling process models and rolling process data, with connection with rolling mill Level 2 system, etc.

  • Expert system, which consists of logics, data and influence factors on the mechanical, thermal and metallurgical parameters as well as past reheating experiences.

  • Advanced system learning techniques based on the above-mentioned process models, in which the neural network provides the correcting factors for the model coefficients, and fuzzy logic rules and expert system provide guidelines (upper and lower boundaries, etc.) for the learning.
